Working in loading docks, parking areas, and driveways exposes technicians to vehicle strikes
Overhead door technicians frequently work in active loading docks, warehouses, parking garages, and residential driveways where vehicles are moving. Forklifts, delivery trucks, and passenger vehicles may not see a technician on a ladder or working at floor level near a doorway. Poor lighting, high noise, and the technician's focus on the door all increase the risk of a struck-by incident.
Wear high-visibility clothing
Wear an ANSI Class 2 or Class 3 high-visibility vest or shirt whenever working in areas with vehicle traffic: loading docks, parking lots, driveways, and warehouse floors.
Barricade the work area
Use cones, barriers, or caution tape to mark off the area around the door you are servicing. Position your truck to block the work area from traffic when possible.
Communicate with site personnel
Notify warehouse or facility staff that you will be working on a specific door. Request that forklift and truck traffic be rerouted while you work. Lock out the dock leveler if working near it.
Stay alert and maintain situational awareness
Do not use earbuds or headphones in active traffic areas. Periodically scan for approaching vehicles, especially when working at floor level where you are less visible.
