Dock Leveler & Restraint Inspection

Guided periodic inspection for dock levelers and vehicle restraints: identification, structural inspection, operational testing, underside inspection under lockout/tagout, vehicle restraint and communication-system checks, lubrication, and documentation. Produces the inspection record facility owners need for their maintenance files. Follow ANSI MH30.1 (dock levelers) and MH30.2 (vehicle restraints) along with the manufacturer's service manual — where the manufacturer specifies intervals, tolerances, or fluids, the manufacturer's specification governs.

Warnings

Never walk or stand on a dock leveler in the stored position — it can activate unexpectedly.

Never enter the pit area beneath a leveler deck without locking out the controls and setting the maintenance strut. A falling deck causes fatal crush injuries.

Dock levelers use powerful springs or hydraulics. Keep hands and body clear of pinch points at the lip hinge, hold-down, and deck edges.

Always chock trailer wheels or engage the vehicle restraint before any test involving a trailer at the dock.

Identification & Data Plate

Identify the equipment before inspecting it. Locate the manufacturer's data plate on the leveler (usually on the deck underside, frame, or pit wall) and on the vehicle restraint. Record the manufacturer, model, serial number, and rated capacity of each. Confirm the capacity plate is legible — a missing or unreadable capacity rating is itself a deficiency, because dock users can't verify the leveler is rated for their loads. Identify the leveler type: mechanical (spring-actuated, walk-down), hydraulic (push-button), or air-powered — the test steps that follow differ by type. Note the dock position identifier (door number) used by the facility. Review the previous inspection report if one is available and note any previously flagged items.

Pro Tips

  • Photograph both data plates up front — they're required on the report and are easy to forget once your hands are greasy.
  • If the facility has no dock position numbering, agree on one with the facility manager before you start — records are useless if nobody can tell which dock they describe.
  • Ask the facility how the dock is used (forklift traffic, pallet jack, end loads) — usage patterns tell you where to look for wear.
