Good, better, best: garage door options without the hard sell
Customers hate being sold, but they don't mind choosing. Three clear options, each a complete repair, let the customer pick what fits their budget and how long they plan to stay in the house. Many shops find the average ticket goes up, because some customers pick the longer-lasting repair once they can see what it buys.
The three tiers
- Good: a complete, safe repair with standard parts. Never a stripped-down version that leaves a problem behind.
- Better: longer-life parts plus the related wear items, like 25,000-cycle springs and new cables.
- Best: the most durable fix plus the work that prevents the next call, like 50,000-cycle springs, cables, sealed rollers and a tune-up.
Examples that work
Broken spring: tier the springs by cycle rating and show years of life. At 4 uses a day, 10,000 cycles is about 7 years, 25,000 about 17, and 50,000 about 34. Then show the cost per year: a $395 repair that lasts 7 years is about $58 a year, and a $446 repair that lasts 17 years is about $26 a year. The upgrade becomes a number the customer can check. More in 10,000 vs 25,000-cycle springs.
Opener replacement: tier by features the customer can see: a quieter belt drive, battery backup, a camera, a phone app. Say yes or no for each feature on every option so the comparison is easy.
Tune-up: good covers lubrication, a balance test and safety checks. Better adds worn rollers or a new bottom seal. Best adds a yearly maintenance visit.
How to present them
- Explain what you found first, with photos if you can.
- Show all three options at once, each with its price including tax.
- Mark one as recommended, and say why in one sentence.
- Then stop talking and let the customer choose.
Rules that keep it honest
- The good option always fixes the problem safely.
- Never call a working part failed to fill out a tier.
- Put warranties and cycle ratings in writing.
- No "today only" prices.
Those rules matter because the industry's worst headlines come from inflated, high-pressure quotes. Honest options are the opposite: the customer sees every price and every trade-off.
Build them once
Options only work if every tech presents them the same way. DoorBot builds good, better and best quotes from your own price book, sizes the springs for each cycle rating, and shows years of life and cost per year on the customer's screen.
